electromotive force wikipedia

Voltage

Voltage is also called, in certain circumstances, electromotive force (EMF). Voltage is an electrical potential difference, the difference in electric potential between two places. The unit for electrical potential difference, or voltage, is the volt. The volt is named in memory of Alessandro Volta. One volt equals one joule per coulomb.

ELECTROMOTIVE():

ELECTROMOTIVE:, 。。 A high impedance voltmeter is used to measure the electromotive force or potential between the two electrodes when zero or no signicant current ows between them.

Electromagnetism

It is the dominant force in the interactions of atoms and molecules. Electromagnetism can be thought of as a combination of electrostatics and magnetism, which are distinct but closely intertwined phenomena. Electromagnetic forces occur between any two charged particles. Electric forces cause an attraction between particles with opposite ...

Faraday''s law of induction

OverviewHistoryFaraday''s lawExceptionsFaraday''s law and relativitySee alsoFurther readingExternal links

Faraday''s law of induction (or simply Faraday''s law) is a law of electromagnetism predicting how a magnetic field will interact with an electric circuit to produce an electromotive force (emf). This phenomenon, known as electromagnetic induction, is the fundamental operating principle of transformers, inductors, and many types of electric motors, generators and solenoids.

Lorentz force

In physics, specifically in electromagnetism, the Lorentz force (or electromagnetic force) is the combination of electric and magnetic force on a point charge due to electromagnetic …

20.1: Overview

Electromotive "force" is not considered a force (as force is measured in newtons) but a potential, or energy per unit of charge, measured in volts. Formally, EMF is classified as the external work expended per unit of charge to produce an electric potential difference across two open-circuited terminals.

Talk:Counter-electromotive force

In an inductor, the counter EMF opposes any change in current. This EMF, or voltage, can become very high if the current is forced [or caused] to change quickly. This is the characteristic that causes the reactive opposition to AC current flow and initiates the inductive kick of a spark coil, or relay coil.

Electromotive Force

Electromotive force is defined as the electric potential produced by either an electrochemical cell or by changing the magnetic field. EMF is the commonly used acronym for electromotive force. A generator or a …

Transformer

Transformer. In electrical engineering, a transformer is a passive component that transfers electrical energy from one electrical circuit to another circuit, or multiple circuits. A varying current in any coil of the transformer produces a varying magnetic flux in the transformer''s core, which induces a varying electromotive force (EMF) across ...
