Index | Electricity | 2021 | ATB | NREL
The 2021 Electricity ATB provides consistent, freely available, technology-specific cost and performance parameters across a range of R&D advancements scenarios, resource characteristics, sites, fuel prices, and financial assumptions for electricity-generating technologies, both at present and with projections through 2050. The parameters include:
Cost Projections for Utility-Scale Battery Storage: 2021 Update
The projections are developed from an analysis of recent publications that consider utility-scale storage costs. The suite of publications demonstrates varied cost reductions for battery storage over time. Figure ES-1 shows the low, mid, and high cost projections developed in this work (on a normalized basis) relative to the published values.
Cost Projections for Utility-Scale Battery Storage: 2023 Update
Storage costs are $255/kWh, $326/kWh, and $403/kWh in 2030 and $159/kWh, $237/kWh, and $380/kWh in 2050. Costs for each year and each trajectory are included in the Appendix. Figure 2. Battery cost projections for 4-hour lithium-ion systems.
Utility-Scale Battery Storage | Electricity | 2024 | ATB | NREL
Projected Utility-Scale BESS Costs: Future cost projections for utility-scale BESSs are based on a synthesis of cost projections for 4-hour-duration systems as described by (Cole and Karmakar, 2023). The share of energy and power costs for batteries is assumed to be the same as that described in the Storage Futures Study (Augustine and Blair, 2021) .
Cost Projections for Utility-Scale Battery Storage: 2021 Update
Storage costs are $143/kWh, $198/kWh, and $248/kWh in 2030 and $87/kWh, $149/kWh, and $248/kWh in 2050. Costs for each year and each trajectory are included in the Appendix. Figure 2. Battery cost projections for 4-hour lithium ion systems. These values represent overnight capital costs for the complete battery system.
Commercial Battery Storage | Electricity | 2021 | ATB | NREL
Current costs for commercial and industrial BESS are based on NREL''s bottom-up BESS cost model using the data and methodology of (Feldman et al., 2021), who estimated costs for a 600-kW DC stand-alone BESS with 0.5–4.0 hours of storage. We use the same model and methodology but do not restrict the power and energy capacity of the BESS.
BESS costs could fall 47% by 2030, says NREL
The US National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) has updated its long-term lithium-ion battery energy storage system (BESS) costs through to 2050, with costs potentially halving over this decade. The national laboratory provided the analysis in its ''Cost Projections for Utility-Scale Battery Storage: 2023 Update'', which forecasts …
Commercial Battery Storage | Electricity | 2022 | ATB | NREL
The 2022 ATB represents cost and performance for battery storage across a range of durations (1–8 hours). It represents only lithium-ion batteries (LIBs)—with nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) and lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistries—at this time, with LFP becoming the primary chemistry for stationary storage starting in 2021.
Residential Battery Storage | Electricity | 2023 | ATB | NREL
The 2023 ATB represents cost and performance for battery storage with a representative system: a 5-kW/12.5-kWh (2.5-hour) system. It represents only lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) - those with nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) and lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistries - at this time, with LFP becoming the primary chemistry for stationary storage ...
Utility-Scale Lithium-Ion Storage Cost Projections for Use in …
We create battery cost projections based on a survey of literature cost projections of battery packs and balance of system costs, with a focus on lithium-ion batteries. Low, mid, and high cost trajectories are created for the overnight capital costs and the operating and maintenance costs.
Storage Futures | Energy Analysis | NREL
The Storage Futures Study (SFS) considered when and where a range of storage technologies are cost-competitive, depending on how they''re operated and what services they provide for the grid. Through the SFS, NREL analyzed the potentially fundamental role of energy storage in maintaining a resilient, flexible, and low carbon U.S. power grid ...
